Kendal was a 10 year old spayed female lurcher. She had the most beautiful nature — timid but very friendly — yet had been found tied to a telegraph pole on a country road. She had been restrained using a man’s neck tie, and was in a pitiful condition of neglect.

Kendal passed away comfortably in her sleep last night. She had spent the last months of her life in the home of an experienced vet from the Glenburn Clinic. It is with thanks and sympathy that we extend our wishes to Kendal’s loving foster-carers.

The job of the foster-carer can go so often go unmentioned. In this case we want to thank the family in question for opening their home and their hearts to this gentle lady. Without their love and care Kendal’s passing would have occurred under very different circumstances. It is so important that our charges who have received less than adequate treatment in life are given all the love possible at the end. With Kendal, we could not have hoped for more.

My name is Buster, and the shy looking dog behind me is my mother, Roxy. We have been together since I was born eight years ago; my mother is ten years old. We had always expected to live out our days together with the family we had always known. However, things took a drastic and unexpected turn for the worse a few days ago. Our owners moved to Australia without securing a home for us, and now we find ourselves in an awful predicament.

We were handed to the neighbours we had known in passing for years; they cannot keep us. We are desperately seeking a long term foster home where we can stay together. We are both neutered, fully vaccinated and house trained. We are gentle, friendly, elderly dogs who had not expected to become homeless at this stage of our lives. We are no trouble at all, and hope that someone with a big heart could find their way clear to open their home to us. The Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary has kindly agreed to cover any future veterinary bills we might incur, in the hope that a home might be more forthcoming when costs are excluded.

If you think we might be the company you’re looking for or could offer us the love we so desperately want to reciprocate, please get in touch with the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary and ask for John McCartney.

We can see the wonderful friendship between a boy and his dog from this picture; however, not all boys would be willing to save their pocket money and donate it to the Animal Sanctuary. Also, not all parents would be willing to see the money raised, and double it from their own pockets. This, we’re honoured to say, is exactly what the Davidsons have done, making the Sanctuary £309.00 better of!

We were so touched by this act of kindness we asked for a photograph of Alex with Pippin, in order to tell the story of his generosity. Below is the beautiful letter we received in reply.

Please find attached a photo of our son, Alex and our Kerry-Blue Terrier, who we renamed Pippin (known as Kerry whilst staying with you). You have our permission to use this photo for your next edition of the newsletter and on the website.

With Pippin being dark and quite hairy (although she had a haircut a few weeks ago), it’s difficult to capture her expressions, however, I hope this photo reflects her as being a much loved and spoilt little princess! As a family we still can’t believe our luck that we found such a good natured dog, bearing in mind that Kerry Blues are supposed to be quite aggressive. Since we re-homed her in November 2006 we have never regretted it, she immediately became an integral part of our family. It doesn’t bear thinking about that if it was not for the Sanctuary she would have been put to sleep at Lisburn Pound. It is for this reason that we continue to support all the work you do there. Aside from making donations we also foster Amy the Staffie and only for the fact that Pippin is a bit jealous and Amy doesn’t like other dogs, we would dearly have loved to have re-homed her.

Keep up the good work. Give our best to Margaret and Shane. We’ll see you all soon.

Best Wishes,

Bobby, Sandra, Alex and Pippin Davidson

Our annual ride out this year fell on 10th August 2008; initially set to be a bright, clear day, the eventual downpours did nothing to dampen the spirits of the animal lovers and bike enthusiasts.

Hundreds of bikers descended on Carrickfergus Castle Car park at noon, where the event’s sponsors, Quay Viper’s MCC, marshalled proceedings. Excitement was in the air as a huge number of bikes set off on their journey, taking in Shane’s Hill, Larne and eventually Ballymena. There, everyone stopped in the Cinema Car Park for a much-needed break for refreshments, and to dry off after the downpour. And then, they were off again, for the final stretch: through Randalstown, and on to Antrim.

It was a spectacular sight, as the 270-strong squad of bikes and trikes descended upon the animal sanctuary at around half-past three, lining the road and filling the car park, as hungry motorcyclists rushed to devour delicious burgers and drinks. Everyone was now in high spirits, aided by the pumping music supplied by Willy and his T2 Mobile Disco. We would like to say a big “thank you!” to Willy for his contribution to the day.

Next on the agenda was a raffle with some amazing prizes, ranging from the ever-popular bottles of vodka and Bacardi, though to biker-friendly booty such as crash helmets and leather motorbike jackets. A massive thanks to all those involved in the raffle, and especially those who donated these amazing prizes.

The rideout was a great success financially: with your help, we managed to raise a grand total of £1,500-2000. All proceeds will go to build an exercise run for Lady and PJ, two long term sanctuary guardians, to keep them stimulated during the day. This run is in memory of Dr Robin Sinclair, whose unexpected death saddened us all earlier this month. Every penny goes straight to the Sanctuary and no-one will appreciate it more than the residents in our care.

Open Day at the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary fell on the 9th of August this year, with the customary unpredictable summer weather. Due to the sudden death of long-time Sanctuary volunteer and friend, Dr. Robin Sinclair, the times of the event were changed as a mark of respect, as well as to allow staff and volunteers to attend his funeral. A devoted member and ardent supporter of the Sanctuary, Dr. Sinclair would have wanted the Open Day to go ahead. Nevertheless, it was with a heavy heart that the event took place.

The Sanctuary gates opened to the public at 10am, which meant staff and volunteers had been cleaning and organising from very early on. The run-up to the opening saw torrential rain which dampened not only our bedraggled workers, but the already melancholic mood.

By 11am, however, weather and spirits both lifted as the sun began to shine. With music, activities and a general bustle, everyone began to dry out and focus on their allocated tasks. We would like to acknowledge Willy here, who runs the T2 Mobile Disco: his upbeat tunes always entertain the crowd, and every year he provides his services for free. A huge thank-you to Willy! Indeed, thanks to everyone who gave up their time and energy in order to make the day a success: staff, volunteers, committee members and the public all gave unreservedly to this annual event which raises an essential amount used towards Sanctuary running costs and public awareness - two factors which enable the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary to continue their ‘commitment to care’, a sentiment which was always close to Dr. Sinclair’s heart, and one which we’re all very proud to be able to honour for the foreseeable future.

Sadly, our Long-Term resident ‘Jed’ had to be put to sleep on Friday the 25th of July 2008. He had been suffering from internal problems for some time now. As they progressed, so his quality of life deteriorated, to the point whereby the kindest thing to do was release him from pain.

Jed had arrived at the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary on the 6th of June, 1998. He was already a mature dog which would have put him in the region of 11 - 14 years of age.

He was a much loved character at the Sanctuary. No one will miss him more than his kennel partner, ‘Candy’: having been together for many years, the two were inseparable. They always took their walks together and shared treats. Like most elderly couples, they seemed to know exactly what the other was about to do.

We would like to offer our sympathy to all the loyal voluntary walkers who spent so much time with Jed, who grew to adore the gruff bark reserved for his feline neighbours, and his puppy-like behaviour when treats were forthcoming. He will be sadly missed by all the staff, residents and volunteers.

The weather on the evening of Sunday the 20th of July was nothing short of glorious: the sun shone as more than sixty volunteers assembled in the car park of the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary, eager to exercise their allocated canine companions.

As the walkers left the premises, another team of volunteers busied themselves barbequing a veritable feast. Burgers, veggie burgers and kebabs were the order of the day.

No one appreciated the day more than the dogs themselves. Every dog in the Sanctuary enjoyed a wonderful walk, and the money donated in sponsorship will benefit them for many months to come. Although an exact total has not been tallied yet, at the time of writing the amount is in the region of one and a half thousand pounds!

This has been a tremendously rewarding event; as such, the Sanctuary would like to thank everyone involved. Their time, cooking expertise and tireless fundraising resulted in a successful and fun day out for everyone. We would also like to express our gratitude to Jollye’s in Glengormley for kindly donating the dog leads which helped to make the event run smoothly and efficiently.
