Motorcycle Rideout this Sunday August 8, 2006
Posted by Jonny Mitchell in : Old News , add a commentWe will be hosting our 6th annual Motorbike Rideout on Sunday 13th August, with all entry proceeds going to support the work done by the Sanctuary.
All sizes and shapes of motorbikes, sidecars and trikes and their owners will be meeting up at 12.30pm at Carrickfergus Castle on Sunday before travelling in convoy through various towns and villages across County Antrim, culminating in a barbeque at the Sanctuary premises in Antrim at approximately 3.30pm. Actress Alex Forde (Dympna from Give My Head Peace) will also be attending to cheer on the procession and present ballot prizes.
The event, run in conjunction with Quay Vipers MCC, is always well supported and the sight of hundreds of bikes travelling en masse is certainly a head-turning one. The biking enthusiasts come from all walks of life and include accountants, lawyers, doctors and businesspeople, all joined together in their love of the open road and their keenness to raise money for worthwhile charitable causes.
One of those taking part will be 72-year old John Smiley of Millisle with his self-built Citroen trike. Inspired by Billy Connolly’s famous use of a £20,000 Boom trike in his recent TV series Billy Connolly’s World Tour of England, Ireland and Wales, John decided to build his own customised trike. With parts totalling just £600, John’s 2-seater trike includes a Citroen 2CV engine, TV, CD and radio, cigarette lighter, sirens and blue flashing front lights.
The entry fee for this event is £5 and L-plate drivers will also be made welcome. For further details please contact John McCartney at Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary on 028 9446 6993.

Scruffy April 13, 2006

The dog pictured in the accompanying photograph has been evading capture since November of last year. Aptly named ‘Scruffy’, he is a Deerhound crossbreed and has been running wild in the Crumlin area feeding from bins and kindly neighbours until he was eventually hoodwinked into a secure garden on the 23rd of March 2006.
The proud dog warden at his side is Bernadette Burns. She has been trying to make friends with and tame this timid creature over the past months but nothing seemed to work until he was eventually cornered and the game was up. Although very nervous, he walked well on the lead and hopped obediently into Bernadette’s car.
‘Scruffy’ spent one night in Antrim Dog Pound before being brought reluctantly to the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary where he is currently housed. The Sanctuary staff had also been trying to catch ‘Scruffy’ and, as such, would like to extend their gratitude and praise to Bernadette Burns.
If you would be interested in offering ‘Scruffy’ a home and have a very secure fense or run please don’t hesitate to get in touch. He is approximately 4 years old and with patience and company would make a terrific pet.
UPDATE: We’re happy to report Scruffy has found a home.
