We’ve raised well over £2,000 on there so far, and hope our supporters help us to hit the next landmark of £3,000. None of this includes, of course, the many and equally significant contributions by post, telephone, and so on. We’re just as grateful to all those donors.
You can see many of the donations and messages on our virtual ‘wall’ here (all thanks to the diligent work of dutiful secretary Diane). Since last time, we’re up to an amazing 269 bricks!

Mrs Joyce Graham won the Individual Volunteering Award – Long Service in the Antrim Community Excellence Awards April 12, 2011

- Joyce receives her award

- Joyce in her element
In 1996 an independent, registered charity was set up to allow for animal re-homing, welfare and education when the USPCA closed; this charity became known as the Mid Antrim Animal Sanctuary. Throughout this time a total of 9549 dogs and cats have been re-homed and an unquantifiable number have been rescued from cruelty and distress.
Joyce was one member of a small group of individuals who became involved in this initiative at the beginning and she has been remained heavily involved ever since. She was instrumental in putting in place processes and procedures which have allowed the charity to flourish while also meeting the needs of statutory and external agencies.
Since starting in 1996 Joyce has acted as the Honorary Treasurer which has a considerable remit. Externally this includes dealing with the auditors, solicitors, bank officials, HMRC payments, pay roll giving and various online fundraising activities. Internally her role includes membership payments, applications for grants, budget control, cash transactions, preparing the accounts for audit, accounts specific to the charity shop and advising the management committee and trustees. Joyce also maintains the membership register for the sanctuary and is instrumental in organising a huge number of the fundraising activities that take place on an annual basis. This work means that she visits the sanctuary on a daily basis and has turned the dining room of her house into a mini office in order to facilitate the requirements of her role. The sanctuary has annual operating costs of £250,000 which goes some way to put into perspective the work that Joyce undertakes within the sanctuary.
On a personal level Joyce is resourceful, adaptable and does not let anything get in her way in order to get job done. She is totally committed to the work of the sanctuary and has dedicated her time for the welfare of the animals throughout the Antrim Borough and beyond. Without her involvement it is not believed that the sanctuary would be in the position it is today; in fact when the sanctuary is mentioned Joyce is the first person that normally comes to mind.
In addition to her voluntary work with the sanctuary and home commitments Joyce is also involved with other community and church related activities including the choir which she attends twice weekly.
The Management Team and staff at the Mid Antrim Animal Sanctuary believe she is richly rewarding of the recognition that this award would afford.

Thank you all for a priceless gift June 29, 2010
Posted by Jonathan Mitchell in : Good News , add a commentOn behalf of ‘Friends of Jonathan’ and the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary I would like to extend our whole-hearted gratitude. There are no words to express how important your contribution is and just how much it is appreciated.
Jonathan has Cystic Fibrosis, Osteoporosis, and Diabetes and has dedicated his life to his voluntary work with animals at the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary. Not only is he the proud owner of four rescue dogs, but also shoulders the responsibility of over twenty Sanctuary Residents through his devotion to helping the homeless. As the Long-Term Sponsorship Secretary Jonathan writes to sponsors individually with stories, photographs and updates from their beneficiary.
Jonathan’s condition left him unable to leave his home – his dependency on oxygen meant he could no longer travel outside the perimeter of his oxygen cylinder equipment. As such we, at the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary, are so grateful for your contribution which has allowed us to purchase a portable oxygen concentrator. Your help has been invaluable and for that we cannot thank you enough.
‘Friends of Jonathan’ had the privilege of holding a Fundraising Evening in The Ramble Inn on Friday the 25th of June; featuring live music (Billy Finlay ), a fabulous dj set with all Jonathan’s favourite tunes (T2 Disco), limousine rides (courtesy of AW Law Limousines
) and fantastic ballot prizes (thanks to friends and family, and the generosity of the public). Particular attention must go to our friends at Favour Pet Foods and , for going above and beyond the call of duty by supplying a delicious buffet for over twice the number in attendance as originally agreed. The cost more than doubled due to the level of interest in the event and, to this extent, we owe this business in Randalstown a huge plaudit.
The event was an inspirational success, yielding over two thousand pounds – leaving the final target within our grasp. We are honoured to thank all the contributors as they afforded Jonathan the opportunity to attend his function, only with the aid of the portable oxygen concentrator, and for that we are indebted to you all. Thank you for changing this young man’s life.

Janine and friends win at Crufts
An Antrim veterinary clinic worker is celebrating following success at
Crufts, where she was part of the Northern Ireland team which bagged
the Obedience 'World Cup'.
Janine Brownlees, with team mates Sam McCracken,
Tracey McKinley, Carol Walker and Michael McCartney entered the world-famous dog show to represent the Province in the
competition which displays dog behavioural training at its best.
The Firmount Veterinary Clinic staff member trained her two dogs, Jack
and Chloe, to a world-class standard, and Crufts judges were so
impressed with their team effort, that they awarded the NI squad first
place in the international obedience category.
Janine's two mongrel dogs, who she discovered at the Mid-Antrim Animal
Sanctuary, were joined by Border Collies Ben and Storm for last
week's event, and the winning team are preparing to continue their
success in the local dog show circuit over the coming months.
Speaking to the Antrim Guardian, Janine said: “I have been involved in
dog obedience training for seven years, and regularly attend one or
two dog shows a month.
“Last Christmas, myself and my two dogs were selected for the Northern
Ireland team to enter the Obedience World Cup competition at Crufts,
and it has been an exciting few months training the dogs up to the
high standard required.”
She added: “The dogs must show skill at 'heeling' on command,
retrieving, and obeying commands to 'stay away', all under the
scrutiny of the world's foremost judges on canine behaviour.
“Our team were thrilled to come first, and we all put in a great deal
of work for this achievement. I can't wait to send Jack and Chloe back
in to the local circuit, where they can continue their success now
they are world champions.”
Paying tribute to Janine, fellow animal lover Kelly Marshall said:
“This is such an amazing achievement. But Janine really deserves it as
over the years she has given 100 per cent to her dogs and she is such
an inspiration.
“Apart from Chloe and Jack, who were with her at Crufts, Tea is her
princess and her two most recent rescue dogs Dot and Bumper are two
great dogs that, if it were not for Janine, would not have such
enjoyable lives.”

Bella came to live with us last month and has settled really well into her new environment. She is extremely affectionate. She loves running in the fields, she loves her walks on the lead, she enjoys dozing under the table (and snoring!) but most of all, she loves her cuddles after all her activities! She is now 42 kilos (she was 40 when she left the Sanctuary) and got her 2nd vaccination last week.
Living on a farm really suits Bella. She has loads of space to explore. She was nervous initially (I don’t think she had ever seen anything on four legs bigger than her!), but now she trots along happily after my brother when he feeds them and enjoys all the activity going on around her. She has become friends with our three cats and is respectful of their space.
Bella has brought new life into our family and home, and, whilst we will never forget her predecessor – Tweed – who came to us from the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary in 1999. It is a real privilege to provide a home for Bella. Her love of life, sense of fun, energy, affection and companionship has really helped us to remember Tweed without tears. She found a bone which Tweed had buried shortly before he died. I like to think he had left it as a welcome gift!
Many think for looking after Bella until we found each other! I really hope that many of your dogs and cats will find new homes soon.
Heather, Kenny & Bella
