Discover the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary… May 8, 2009

We received a very interesting email recently concerning a certain dog you may have seen recently:

Hi, we got a wee brown puppy from you almost 10 years ago; she was born in the Sanctuary to a Springer. Trassey recently turned 10 (she got a plush singing birthday cake, a liver & garlic birthday cake and a squeaky pig). She was adopted as a puppy from Mid Antrim and has brought us nothing but joy, she’s still a beauty at her age and often gets stopped on walkies for admiration..she actually expects it! She now lives with her little brother (a rescue border collie; Dexter) in the countryside. She recently appeared in a NI Tourist Board advertisement on TV throughout the UK, and has been seen by approx 16 million people.

All rescue dogs deserve adoring homes, they’re homeless through no fault of their own, and enhance your life more than you could imagine. I would urge everyone not to support breeding and selling of little lives, but to give a home to a doggie from a sanctuary. End the shame of Northern Irelands’ rates of animal cruelty and abandonment. You’ll wonder why you didn’t rehome a dog years ago! They could go on to be tv stars!

The Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary would like to extend a whole-hearted “thank you” to everyone who so generously sponsored Clare Kelly and Shane Steele to compete in the Belfast Marathon on the 4th of May. We hope you will be as pleased and proud as we are of how well they both did by completing the full 26 miles on a cold, grey, drizzly day.

Clare Kelly – a regular volunteer and dedicated dog walker – is eighteen years old, and a pupil at Antrim Grammar. Clare’s dog walking became an essential part of her training; honing her stamina in order to walk the full 26 miles in just under 7 hours – WELL DONE, CLARE!

Shane Steele, our Sanctuary kennel assistant, had also been in training for the past few months. Shane not only ran the full 26 miles but did it in just over three and a half hours! Together they rose over £1500.00, with sponsorship still coming in. We are all delighted with this result and with Clare and Shane requesting the funds be spent on outdoor facilities for the residents; we are all eagerly anticipating a tangible record of their enormous achievement.

Also pictured left, are three of the five wonderful young ladies who took part in the Marathon as a relay team – raising much needed funds for the Sanctuary. They all work in the Clear Pharmacy in Antrim, coming up with the idea through their mutual love of animals. Their time, energy and love certainly paid off as they donated over £500.00 to the upkeep of the shelter; again, with money still coming in! Their generosity is appreciated so much by everyone, but none more so than the residents in our care, who rely and benefit from such positive acts of kindness.

When asked if he would consider doing the marathon again next year, Shane replied; “Definitely! I hope to do better next year, going faster and raising more money and awareness. I’ve been speaking to quite a few others since Monday [4th of May] who are really interested in competing next year. It would be brilliant to have a bigger team, not just to raise more funds, but it would be really beneficial for training, pushing and encouraging each other on.”

The Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary would like to apologise for the cancellation of the second Dog Control and Awareness class. Unfortunately, Paul Chapman, our experienced dog handler who takes the class, has fallen ill. Therefore, the session has been postponed until further notice. We apologise again for any inconvenience and hope you will keep a space in your diary for the re-scheduled meeting. Watch this space…

The Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary will be holding the second ‘Dog Control and Awareness’ class on Monday the 11th of May 2009 in the Sanctuary car park, beginning at 6pm. This session will consist of a ‘run through’ of everything which took place at the first class (excluding theory) for those who missed it. It will also be a good opportunity for those who did attend the initial class to hone their techniques! As before, the session is being taken by Mr. Paul Chapman, Antrim Dog Warden and experienced dog handler. We are very much indebted to him for his time and patience.

Please make time to attend, the class is free and will be of interest to anyone who wants to represent the Sanctuary’s dedication to responsible ownership. This is a wonderful chance for us all to live by our slogan; to be “committed to care”.

The Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary is putting out a last-minute reminder that Shane Steele and Clare Kelly will be taking part in the Belfast Marathon this coming Monday. We would like to appeal for your support — not only by cheering them on — but by digging deep and contributing what you can to sponsor Shane and Clare, as they have been working hard for months, and every penny will go to the residents of the sanctuary.

There are several ways you can do this: by using the printable form found here; sending a cheque made payable to “M.A.A.S.” by post to the address on the right; or by simply calling in and giving whatever you can spare.

Make yourself part of the winning team; support Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary!
