Dear Friends,

Unfortunately we were unable to complete a Newsletter this winter and would like to apologise to the membership for this failure on our part. As such, we hope this brief update will suffice while the Newsletter goes into production, and that 2009 will see us regain a more positive editorial standard!

We trust you all had a wonderful Christmas, and a Happy New Year. We cannot thank you enough for the incredible support we have received this year. Your contributions of food, blankets and monetary collections have made a huge difference to the lives of so many. With the country facing financial hardship, we had been preparing for something of a crisis over the festive season. As the general public have had to tighten their belts, we have witnessed many faithful family pets being given up as an expense too far. Veterinary treatment and pet food did not make a priority on many household lists thus leaving sanctuaries like Mid-Antrim full almost beyond capacity.

Fortunately for us, the generosity of Sanctuary supporters seemed to outweigh the apathy of the nation. We were inundated with good-will gestures, and despite the sleet and ice, volunteers turned up to help in their droves. The picture above shows Caroline Poole, Joy Galbraith and two Sanctuary residents with Santa Claus. They arrived at the Sanctuary before 7am (while Santa was still doing his rounds) in order to have all the pets in our care fed, cosy and happy before they left to start their own Christmas.

This is a sentiment we witness over and over at Mid-Antrim: the kindness and consideration of those who put the needs of the residents before their own. With this in mind, we would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and believe that with members such as you, we too will have a heart-warming and productive year.

Our thanks and best wishes.
